Good news book lovers!
The drive-thru at YOUR community library is open!
After participating in a webinar yesterday(3/30/20) with CDC specialists entitled, Mitigating COVID-19 for Museums, Libraries, Archives, I've decided to open up the drive thru for book pick up. 
IF interested in picking up your items, go to the library website (www.warrentonlibrary.org), find the items you would like to request and place a hold.

Main points from webinar:

  • CDC specialists are not concerned about books, paper based products or letters as a source of transmission.
  • Virus is present in low quantities on paper and will die quickly

Can COVID-19 live up to 24 hours on paper?

  • DR. Berendes says: It’s easier for  hands to become contaminated on hard, non-porous surfaces vs. paper. “The amount of the virus an infected person is shedding will be more concerning when they are coughing. They really have to cough or sneeze on the object and really contaminate it.”
  • If you are very concerned about someone getting mucus on book or paper, do not touch for 24 hours after return.
  • More concerned about transmission with people in close contact, and then after that, contact with frequently touched surfaces, light switches, faucets, etc. 
  • No need for masks during laundry or other cleaning of fabrics or items. 
  • Clean hands well, if there was contact with COVID 19 person and the item.
  • CDC Website links to EPA for cleaners that are effective for this virus. Cleansers are meant for hard, nonporous surfaces, that's what is designed for, and some are appropriate for soft materials, fabrics.  https://www.epa.gov/pesticide-registration/list-n-disinfectants-use-against-sars-cov-2
  • CDC is not very concerned about viruses getting out of paper or books materials.  If concerned, wait 24 hours.  
  • Practice good hand hygiene and let sit for 24 hours if concerned, but for CDC,not a concern. 
  • UV light as disinfection? Refer to EPA for guidance. UV may not be on there, use with proper materials appropriate for item (book, document,etc) 
  • Work with local health officials of strategies that are used in your community.
